ITIN Renewal 2020: A Quick Guidebook for Expired ITINs

Millions of taxpayers’ Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN) became invalid by the end of December 2019. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) gives affected taxpayers notice of submitting their ITIN renewal applications.

“We urge taxpayers with expiring ITINs to take action and renew the number as soon as possible. Renewing before the end of the year will avoid unnecessary delays related to their refunds,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “To help with this process, the IRS is sharing this material in multiple languages. We encourage partner groups to share this important information to reach as many people with ITINs as possible.”

Who should renew an ITIN? #

US taxpayers who are required to file a tax return in 2020 and whose ITIN is expiring must submit an ITIN renewal application. Others do not have to get into action.

Not using your ITIN on a federal tax return at least once in the past three years will make it invalid for US tax return.

ITINs with middle digits 83,84,85,86 or 87 (for example 9NN-83-NNNN) need to be renewed. You should also note that ITINs with middle digits 70,71,72,73,74,75,76,77,78,79,80,81,82 which expired in 2016,2017 or 2018 can also be renewed.

When to renew an ITIN? #

The IRS urges taxpayers to start their renewal process immediately to avoid the rush. Waiting to receive a notice of expiration is not necessary if your middle digits have been identified for expiration by the IRS. Due to the IRS peak processing periods (January 15 through April 30), notification of your ITIN application status may take 9 to 11 weeks.

If your ITIN is not expired and no one in your family has an ITIN that is expiring, IRS expects you to wait and renew your ITIN when it expires.

ITIN renewal for spouses and dependents residing outside of the United States may take time. Only when filing an individual tax return, it is required to renew their application. Another ITIN renewable process occurs when someone else files individual income tax returns claiming them for a tax benefit. In this case, a federal income tax return must be attached to their W-7 renewal application.

What do you need to do to renew your expired ITIN? #

Do you know what to do when you need to submit your ITIN renewal application? Here is the process:

  • Submitting a completed form W-7 and all required documents is a must for taxpayers.
